Being a ‘redshirt’ is something of a joke and a massive occupational hazard, specifically in science fiction. Redshirts are expendable characters, designed into the story to die instead of the main characters. Their death illustrates the danger faced in the story, without killing off the special people.
In one sense, Jesus is a redshirt. He was sent to Earth on a mission: to die, so that others could live. Unlike expendable characters, though, He is the main character in the story. He is a sacrificial lamb that we couldn’t afford to lose. But it is only through His death that we can live.
His terrible death shows us the danger we are in. Sin has doomed us all to eternal death. The only way for us to escape death is for the ultimate sacrifice to be made. Jesus took the punishment we all deserve so that we could be made right with God. It’s like we are all redshirts, but Jesus takes our redshirts onto Himself so that we don’t die.
Also, unlike normal redshirts, Jesus didn’t stay dead. He came back to life after three days. By this amazing victory, we know that Jesus has defeated the power of death.
Follow Him as your captain, and stop being a redshirt condemned to die.
