True sanity?

  • Matt's Musings

Imagine one of our proud world leaders disappearing from office for a number of years. You see pictures on social media showing them with unkempt hair and nails, sleeping rough, eating grass like a cow. Then one day, you read their first ‘tweet’ for seven years. The headline says, “I raised my eyes towards heaven, and my sanity was restored.” You read on. “I had been so proud, thinking I had achieved everything by my own efforts and greatness…deep down I knew that wasn’t true, but I ignored my conscience and the warnings people gave me from time to time. Then one day it happened. I completely lost my mind for seven whole years. God did it…I came to see that God is in heaven and he does as he pleases. He is king, not me. For the first time in my life I have true sanity.”

This actually happened many years ago to the most powerful man on planet earth at that time. His name was Nebuchadnezzar (Neb for short). His story is dramatic. He came to see that there is no such thing as a self-made person, but that we all depend upon God for everything. He saw that he needed the life that only God could give.

Neb was a proud king who God needed to humble. Jesus is the true king over everything, yet he was willing to humble himself to being made man and shamefully crucified on a cross. Jesus did it in order to save proud sinners like Neb from the punishment their pride deserves. Jesus did it to give people like Neb a new heart so that they can live truly sane lives.

It was only when Neb lifted his eyes to heaven that his sanity was restored. As human beings made in the image of God, we can only be in our right minds by trusting in Jesus Christ. Do you have the true sanity that Jesus alone can give?
